Sustainability

At 3G Seafood Solutions, we take our sourcing responsibilities seriously. Our Purchasing team uses this policy to manage the supply chain of our seafood range, in order to minimise any impact on the environment and its natural resources.

Our aim is to source all wild-capture and farmed fish from sustainable and responsibly managed sources.

Wild Caught

  • The sale of species intrinsically vulnerable to exploitation or dependent upon habitats particularly vulnerable to damage by fishing should be avoided.
  • Wherever possible, wild caught fish should be sourced from stocks managed responsibly in accordance with the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing and harvested at sustainable levels, which do not pose a risk to the reproductive capacity of the stock. Sourcing from stocks where harvesting levels pose a threat to the integrity of the stock should be avoided.
  • Sourcing from fisheries where problems with illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing are known should be avoided.

Farmed Fish

  • Farmed fish should be sourced from well managed farms that farm to high environmental standards, which are fully incorporated into an environmental management system and source their feed from sustainable sources.
  • Farmed fish should be fully traceable to production site and an independent body should carry out a regular audit to ensure high farming standards are implemented and maintained.
  • Where available, fish should be sourced from fisheries or farms that have been certified by independent international certification bodies, such as the Marine Stewardship Council.

Capture or Fishing Method

Fishing methods used should be the most appropriate available, given the sustainability objectives above:

Preferred fishing methods:

  • Line-caught, hand line or hook and line
  • Pole and line and troll
  • Creel
  • Traps
  • Diver-caught
  • Hand-gathered, raked
  • Sustainable farming methods for shellfish such as rope-grown

Fishing Methods to be avoided:

  • Mid-water pair trawling where there is known substantial by catch of marine mammals
  • Bottom trawling in sensitive environments such as on or around seamounts
  • Beam-trawling
  • Dredging
  • Use of dynamite and cyanide

In addition,

  • Where trawl nets are used, mesh sizes should be appropriate to the size at which the target species matures
  • Long-line fisheries must be certified as bird-friendly or turtle-friendly, or as an absolute minimum be able to demonstrate a commitment to minimizing by catch
